Report: Knicks SF Carmelo Anthony Unlikely To Waive No-Trade Clause

The New York Knicks have reached somewhat of a crossroads in their franchise’s history.

On one side stands the young, up and coming stud Kristaps Porzingis. While he is not the star we all think he can be yet, he still has shown flashes of the potential which he possesses. On the other side stands Carmelo Anthony, the older superstar on the downswing of his career.

It appears that it is just too late for ‘Melo, but too early for Kristaps. This puts the Knicks in a precarious situation. The simple solution seems to be to trade Carmelo Anthony, but there are a few roadblocks in the way.

First, he comes with a massive contract, one that does not match his production on most nights. I am a huge ‘Melo fan, but most teams will not be willing to take on his contract considering both his age and ability.

Then of course there is the no-trade clause. Carmelo has the ability to decline any trade the Knicks may work out for him, and must agree to leave if asked to do so. This creates a problem for the Knicks, who seem desperate to move him.

According to fellow NBA superstar and Anthony’s good friend, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo has no intentions of waiving his no-trade clause anytime soon. (According to the New York Daily News).

“He loves it here. He loves being here. His family loves it here. And he wants to win here,” Wade told the Daily News at shootaround Thursday. “He’s going to be here as long as they want him here — win, lose or draw”

Well, there you have it. If Melo is saying he wants to stay, and his best friend is saying he wants to stay, it seems evident that he will be staying in New York. However, if the perfect trade arises, such as with the Cavaliers or Clippers, Carmelo may be inclined to lift that no-trade clause and join one of his superstar friends.

It will be asking a lot of those franchises to make the deal, however. To be honest, I think Knicks fans should just expect Melo to be here for the long term.
