Earlier today, Major League Baseball announced that Mets star Yoenis Cespedes was one of three National League outfielders to be awarded the Silver Slugger award. It is Cespedes’ first Silver Slugger, and the Mets first recipient since David Wright back in 2008.
Cespedes was clearly one of the best hitters in the NL last season, hitting .280/.354/.530 with 34 home runs. Cespedes also brought an attitude and swagger to the Mets which they haven’t had in a very long time, if ever.
Of course, Yoenis is a free agent this winter, and I believe the Mets should do everything in their power to keep him around. The resurgence of the Mets began with Matt Harvey’s debut, but it was accelerated by the arrival of Yoenis Cespedes.
Hopefully, the Mets can lock the 31 year old up for the long term.
